The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has issued a stern warning to landowners in Abuja regarding unpaid ground rent, emphasizing that failure to settle outstanding debts may lead to the revocation of property rights.
He gave the warning at the inauguration of upgraded roads in the Ushafa area of Bwari, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Describing ground rent as crucial for funding infrastructure, Wike stated that “it is vital for maintaining and developing the FCT.”
He stated that “the names of defaulters have been published in national newspapers to encourage compliance.”
The Minister stressed that these funds were essential for road construction and other public services in the FCT.
Wike urged residents to fulfill their financial obligations, saying “taxpayers have the right to demand transparency and accountability in government spending.”
He affirmed that those who meet their obligations can rightfully inquire about the use of their taxes.
This firm stance reflects the FCT Administration’s commitment to enforcing ground rent payments as a means of ensuring continuous development and infrastructure improvement in the capital.
