The Jigawa State House of Assembly has formed a special committee to examine the state’s electoral and local government laws.
This decision came after Abubakar Kallo, representing Hadejia Constituency, proposed it in response to a report from the House Committee on Local Government about a communiqué from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).
IPAC in Jigawa State recommended amending the state’s electoral law to give political parties a 360-day notice period for election preparation.
The council emphasized the necessity for reform given the current economic, social, and political challenges facing citizens throughout the state.
Aminu Zakari, chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, seconded the motion. Other members unanimously supported it and endorsed considering IPAC’s concerns.
Speaker Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin declared the report adopted and appointed the ad hoc committee, led by Deputy Speaker Sani Isyaku Abubakar.

The primary opposition party in Jigawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has disassociated itself from IPAC’s request for a one-year extension of the local government council election.
The chairmen and councillors of the local government councils in Jigawa State will see their term of office expire by July of this year.
