The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, alongside others, took oath as members of the sixth ECOWAS Parliament at the International Conferences Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, representatives from other ECOWAS countries, diplomats, and top government officials attended the ceremony on Thursday.

During the opening session, Natasha Akpoti and other newly elected members took their oath as members of the ECOWAS Parliament.
Established by the ECOWAS Treaty of May 28, 1975, signed in Lagos, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Parliament comprises 115 members from the 15 member states, including Nigeria, which has 35 slots — seven senators and 18 House of Representatives members.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, transmitted the Nigerian delegation’s list to the President of the ECOWAS Commission and the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament. The Deputy President of the Senate leads the Nigerian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.
The tenure of members of the parliament is four years from the date of inauguration.
