Six Enugu State House of Assembly members elected under the Labour Party (LP) have switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) citing irreconcilable division and frequent crises within the Labour Party at both national and state levels.
They made the announcement during the Assembly’s plenary on Thursday.
They lamented that the Labour Party has descended into a state of perpetual discord, marked by internal factions engaged in legal battles, hindering its ability to effectively serve the people’s interests.
Once a symbol of progressive ideals, the Labour Party is now synonymous with internal strife, diminishing its capacity to fulfill the electorate’s aspirations.
They pointed out divisions like the Abure and Apapa factions, as well as conflicts involving the national treasurer and the parent body, NLC, within the party.
Expressing optimism that the PDP will provide a platform to continue serving their constituents’ interests, they thanked the Labour Party leadership for their past support.

Among the six defectors are the Chief Whip, Hon. Ejike Eze representing Igboeze North I; the House leader, Hon. Johnson Ugwu representing Enugu North; and Hon. Princess Ugwu representing Enugu South Rural. Also included are Hon. Pius Ezeugwu representing Nsukka East, Hon. Amuka Williams representing Igbo-Etiti West, and Hon. Osita Eze representing Oji River.
Their defection motion was initiated by Rt. Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu and seconded by Rt. Hon. Jane Eneh.
