On Thursday, the Senate resolved to investigate the immediate and underlying factors contributing to the declining revenue generated from the development of solid minerals in the country.
The Senate also aimed to investigate the scope and impact of illegal mining activities;
Examining the involvement of both local and foreign industry stakeholders.
Additionally, it decided to conduct a comprehensive review of all privatization and commercialization initiatives related to;
Mining and mineral resources, implemented by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) from 1999 up to the present.
These actions were a response to a motion introduced by Senator Osita Ngwu representing Enugu West.

In the same vein, the Senate called upon relevant security agencies to enhance their surveillance efforts to prevent further illicit exploitation of the country’s solid minerals.
The committee on solid minerals development was tasked to report the findings of its investigation within three weeks.
