A new crisis has emerged in the Rivers State House of Assembly, amid rumors of an approaching impeachment procedure against the state’s governor, Sim Fubara.
The House ousted its leader, Edison Ehie, on Monday, a move largely regarded as a prelude to the governor’s possible impeachment.
Twenty-four Assembly members, including Speaker Martin Amaewhule, supported this move.
During this chaotic event, the governor made a surprise appearance at the Assembly Complex, prompting House members to flee as tear gas was shot outside the building.
In a speech to his supporters at the Assembly Complex, Fubara adamantly declared that he had committed no offense worthy of impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He challenged them to detail any misbehavior that would justify such a harsh punishment.

The governor also assured the people of the state that the benefits of democracy would continue, promising to share more information on the subject when the time came.
This occurred immediately after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.
Though it is unclear whether this incident is related to the ongoing political squabble.
