The Nigerian State Security Services, DSS has confirmed that suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is under going Investigation by the DSS.
DSS Public Relations Officer (PRO), Peter Afunanya, confirmed in a statement
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons,” the statement reads.
Spokeman of the State Secret Service urged the public, particularly the Media, to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning the interrogation of Mr Emefiele.
The statement comes hours after the DSS has denied widespread claims that Emefiele was in its custody.
Reports of Emefiele’s arrest were widely shared online, moments after his suspension was made public on Friday evening.
Earlier, DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya has denied the arrest of the former CBN boss.
In a terse statement, “Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS,” the spokesman said
It will be recalled that the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey in a statement on Friday, announced Emefiele’s suspension.
“President Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect. This is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy,” the statement reads.
He was directed to hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) Folashodun Shonubi, who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
