A former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general election.

Atiku polled 371 votes to win six other major contenders at the election held at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Saturday.

To win the PDP’s 2023 ticket, Atiku defeated the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who scored 237 votes, Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel (38 votes) and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki (70 votes).

Other aspirants with the number of votes polled include; Bala Mohammed- 20; Sam Ohuanbunwa – 1; and Pius Anyim – 14

Atiku Abubakar had contested the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party during the 2011 presidential election losing out to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2014, he joined the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2015 presidential election and contested the presidential primary and lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2017, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party and was the party’s presidential candidate during the 2019 presidential election, again losing to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.
