The Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA) has warned the National Assembly to halt undemocratic legislation to avoid nationwide anti-legislature demonstrations similar to the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
It is anti-democratic for the legislature to be systematically turned into a “clearinghouse” for the executive arm’s application for all kinds of foreign loans. Their representative claimed.
The group disclosed this in a statement by the National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and National Media Director, Zainab Yusuf.
They claimed that the consistent self-inflicted disrobing of the National Assembly’s independence is an invitation to anarchy. They predicted that the masses might go to the streets calling for the closure of both the national and state legislatures since they have allegedly become rubber stamps for the executive arm of the government.
“Nigerians are worried about the weak leadership in the Senate and House of Representatives, and the way the Speaker and Senate President go cap-in-hand to President Buhari and accept to pass all kinds of his draconian bills against Nigerians, and that will soon lead to the nationals in Nigeria to be demanding for the abolition of the legislature,” it added.
HURIWA stated that “Majority of the critical masses of Nigeria are beginning to doubt the functionality of the Senate, since 2019, they have had the sacred duty of carrying out transparent and accountable oversights on the executive arm of government.”
