The Senate is finetuning the process of legalising the Federal Capital Territory College of Nursing and Midwifery, Abuja and the Geographical Information Systems (AGIS).
A public hearing for the two separate legal proposals took place in Abuja on Thursday last week.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said that ”the institution if given a legal backing would improve healthcare delivery services.”
Lawan further stated that it would ”enhance manpower development in the health sector.”
He was represented at the public hearing by the Minority Whip and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, Philips Aduda.
One of the lawmakers, Mohammed Musa representing Niger East Senatorial District said for over 40 years of existence, the institution has been existing without a legal framework
According to him, ”this has hindered funding and accreditation of graduands to be recoginsed professionally and that is why the the senate brought this legislation before the National Assembly to see that the needful is done.”
Key stakeholders present at the meeting were; the representatives of the Minister of FCT, Nigerian Association of Surveyors, INEC, National Research and Space Agency.
They supported the proposed laws overwhelmingly though there were suggestions to upgrade the proposed college to a degree-awarding institution.
The stakeholders also suggested the inclusion of Town Planning team in the composition of the board of the proposed AGIS.
