The Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen’s “strength and stay” for 73 years, has died at 99.
A statement from Buckingham Palace on Friday said; “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The royal was born on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, to Princess Anne of Battenberg and Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.
He married Elizabeth in 1947 at Westminster Abbey, after the pair met at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and Prince George, Duke of Kent, in 1934. The duo has been married for 73 years.
The late Prince Philip was the longest serving consort in British history, and was only months away from his 100th birthday in June.
